Allison Wallace
My art is about craftsmanship and the physicality of making. Using traditional techniques learnt from the artisan, the language of joints and joining are key elements in my work. The viewer can make connections literally and metaphorically. Nostalgic resonance and childhood memories of working with my father in the workshop are important parts of this relationship.
Inspired by journeys, these 'vessels' are built using traditional clinker boat building techniques, which I observed as a child. Whilst some are made using birch ply others are reconstructed using parts of boats or furniture rooted in our common cultural heritage. Aspects of traditional and modern are thus combined giving new meaning to the emerging forms.
